Yelena “Hélène“ Bezukhova is the wife of Pierre Bezukhov and the sister of Anatole Kuragin. Through the course of the show, she is described as "the queen of society" and "a slut."
Her first appearance, besides the "Prologue," is in "The Opera." In "The Opera," she flaunts her affair with Dolokhov. This is where we are first introduced to her weird and possibly incestuous relationship with Anatole as the two share a very breif and unnoticeable kiss. Marya Dmitrievna remarks "There’s a woman one should stay far away from!" due to her being a seductress/whore. Her next appearance is in "The Duel," where she quips with Pierre many times and mocks him for his drinking problem. She even asks herself why she's married to him in the first place. After Dolokhov flaunts his affiar with Helene in front of Pierre, the man challenges Dolokhov to a duel. She protests, but the duel proceeds anyway, and Dolokhov is injured. After this , Anatole asks her to ask Natasha Rostova to the ball that night. We then get a very visable and long kiss from the Kuragin siblings, this somewhat confirms their relationship as more than siblings. Her next appearance is in "Charming." She flatters Natasha and convinces her to come and be with Anatole. In the second act, she appears only in "Find Anatole," where she attempts to defend Anatole's actions to her husband Pierre but he is not having it. She does not sing again, except as chorus.
There are small moments of complexity that we seen in Helene. In "The Duel" when her and Anatole are talking after Pierre shoots Dolokhov, Anatole admires her skill of turning men into beasts where she seems sad at the fact. We can assume that she seems sad at this fact because she knows that she is one of the villains of this story. She knows her place in this society and knows that she has the power to ruin people. In the book, she dies of a drug overdose after trying to have an abortion.
